Vina Late Scratch For Friday's Game
Joe Strauss Post-Dispatch
04/12/2003
The Cardinals scratched second baseman Fernando Vina from the lineup shortly before the first pitch when a visit to a local doctor suggested he is suffering from a fractured fourth metacarpal on his right hand. Vina may be sent to St. Louis for further evaluation. If indeed Vina is suffering from a fractured hand, he will be placed on the disabled list retroactive to Friday.
"It hurt bad yesterday but I played through it," said Vina, who arrived at Minute Maid Park after being examined barely 90 minutes before first pitch. "I thought I could get it taken care of by getting a shot today, but they think it might be something more. I'm going to have to wait to make sure."
Vnna isn't sure how the injury occurred but first remembers feeling discomfort during Wednesday's game. He played Thursday, going one for four. Vina awoke Friday with swelling, which led trainers and doctors to suspect something more serious than tendinitis.
