Vina Out 10-14 Days
09/08/2000
ELK GROVE, Calif - St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Fernando Vina will be sidelined at least 10 days with a cracked rib, a source told TodaysSports.com.
Vina, whose team leads the National League Central Division by a comfortable 9 1/2 games, should be back with the club in time for the end of the season and potential post-season action.
"He could play right now if he had to, with cortisone shots, but he won't," T.C. Danae, an associate of Vina's, told TodaysSports.com Friday. "He's definitely not out for the season, but he will miss at least 10 days of action. There's no urgency."
Vina, the Cardinals' leadoff hitter, suffered the injury sometime last week, a source in his hometown of Elk Grove, California told TodaysSports.com.
An MRI Friday revealed he could be out for up to two weeks. Vina, who is batting .299 with a .383 on-base percentage, has been a team catalyst in the batter's box and in the field. Vina has been excellent at second, committing just five errors in 110 games and sporting a .991 fielding percentage.
Vina, no stranger to dramatics, recently drove in the game-winning run with a walk-off single against the New York Mets at Busch Stadium last Saturday.
