Vina Leaves Game Early, Will Sit Down A Few Days
Rick Hummel of the Post-Dispatch
March 7, 2001
Cardinals second baseman Fernando Vina played Tuesday for the first time in four days but still was moving a little gingerly because of an irritation near his left Achilles' tendon area. He came out after two innings of the Cardinals' 9-7 exhibition victory over the Houston Astros.
Manager Tony La Russa said Vina will be out for several days after the latest flare-up.
Dr. George Paletta, head of the Cardinals' medical staff, said, "There's a bursa just in front of the tendon, and that's really what is inflamed. We're going to close him down and continue to treat him, but his Achilles' tendon seems fine.
"The tendon would be more of a concern."
Shortstop Edgar Renteria, who has been nursing a sore back, also was held out on a windy day but said he would be able to play today.
Paletta said that nothing untoward had been found in X-rays taken of Renteria's back and that he had improved with an exercise program.
"He was feeling much better today," Paletta said.
La Russa admitted he had been concerned about Renteria and Vina. "We've got plenty of time for them to get ready, but any time anybody has a back (injury), you worry about it. Baseball is pretty stressful on a back," La Russa said.
"And Vina's legs are a part of his game, so when you have soreness there, it's not something you take for granted."
