Vina Hurts Left Ankle
May 15, 2001
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- St. Louis second baseman Fernando Vina was helped off the field with a bruised left ankle after being struck by an Omar Olivares pitch in the second inning Tuesday night against Pittsburgh.
The Cardinals' leadoff hitter was taken to a hospital for precautionary X-rays, which were negative.
Vina, a left-handed batter, was struck on his rear foot as he tried to avoid a low pitch by Olivares that sailed far off the plate. Vina stayed down for several minutes before being assisted off the field, unable to put any pressure on the foot.
Vina, who is batting .307 with 14 RBIs, tripled to start the game and scored on Placido Polanco's groundout.
